Ancient Asini in Tolo

Ancient Asini is located at the seaside Palaiokastro of Tolo, approximately 10 kilometers southeast of Nafplio. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Argolis and one of the most beautiful places to visit for travelers staying in Tolo and looking for attractions near Nafplio.

The modern village of Asini is situated further inland, only a short distance from the archaeological site, while the ancient city was built on a rocky coastal hill with a unique view over the Argolic Gulf.

The walls of the ancient acropolis are the most important attraction of the area and are still preserved today on the steep seaside hill. From this point, visitors can admire the crystal-clear waters of the Argolic Gulf, the coastline of Tolo and the small islands located close to the shore.

A visit to Ancient Asini is ideal for those who want to combine history, natural scenery and a beautiful route by the sea. The natural paths of the area offer a unique walking experience, especially for visitors looking for nearby attractions in Tolo, cultural routes and points of interest in the wider Nafplio area.

Thanks to its central location in Tolo, Hotel Electra Tolo is an ideal base for discovering Ancient Asini, Nafplio, Epidaurus, Mycenae and other important attractions in Argolis.

Historical Background of Ancient Asini

Archaeological research has shown that the hill of Ancient Asini has been inhabited since the Early Bronze Age, around 3,000 BC. The city flourished especially during the Mycenaean period, as well as during the early Protogeometric and Geometric periods.

Ancient Asini was abandoned by its inhabitants after its destruction by the Argives in 740 BC. According to the ancient traveler Pausanias, the people of Asini allied with the Lacedaemonians during their invasion of Argolis. After the Lacedaemonians withdrew, the Argives attacked Asini, captured the city and destroyed it almost completely.

Before the final fall of the city, the inhabitants of Asini placed their women and children on ships and left the area. The Argives destroyed Asini and incorporated its land into their own territory, while leaving the sanctuary of Pythaeus Apollo untouched.

Around 300 BC, during the Hellenistic period, new inhabitants settled in the area, leading Asini into a new period of prosperity. The city remained important until the early Roman period, while by the time of Pausanias mainly ruins were visible.

During the medieval period, the location of the ancient acropolis was considered highly strategic, which led to the reconstruction of the hill fortress.

During the Ottoman period, the area was known as “Tzaferaga”, named after the local administrator Aga-Tzafer. Around 1902, the area was renamed Asini, taking back the name of the ancient city.

Today, Ancient Asini is one of the most distinctive historical attractions near Tolo and Nafplio, combining archaeological interest, natural beauty and panoramic views of the Argolic Gulf.
